China repatriates 307 more nationals from Myanmar scam hub; 920 foreign nationals still awaiting transfer
The Myawaddy clearance campaign continues, and state media gives a rare count of the population still inside the pipeline.
China repatriated 307 of its nationals from a scam operations hub in Myanmar on July 9, according to CNA. The transfer continues the clearance program in the Myawaddy border region that has moved thousands of Chinese nationals out of compound zones since late 2025.
Myanmar state media reported the same day that 239 Chinese nationals had been transferred over online scam links, and gave a rare count of the remaining population: 920 foreign nationals still awaiting transfer, of whom 709 have been prosecuted under immigration, narcotics, and related laws, with 211 held pending transfer to their home countries. The 307 and 239 figures may describe overlapping or separate transfers; both are stated here with attribution.
Two cautions on the numbers
First, the state media figures come from the same authorities that permitted the compounds to operate for years and should be treated as a floor, not a census. Second, repatriation counts blend two very different populations: trafficked workers who were held in the compounds under coercion, and voluntary participants in the fraud operations. Neither Chinese nor Myanmar authorities consistently distinguish the two in public reporting, and prosecution on arrival is common for both.
The wider clearance
The context is a campaign that has repatriated over 7,600 Chinese nationals from Myawaddy, demolished more than 630 buildings, and emptied documented hubs including KK Park and Yatai New City. At the same time, reporting from Cambodia shows syndicates relocating within Banteay Meanchey province to evade the crackdown there. Compound populations are moving, and some are moving into new buildings rather than out of the industry.
